MP calls for organised raves

A Bedfordshire MP is calling for councils and emergency services to put on organised raves.

Nadine Dorries, the MP for Mid-Bedfordshire, claims 3,000 people descended on Wavendon on Saturday night for an illegal rave on land owned by the Duke of Bedford.

The MP claims the rave was held in an unsafe building which was next to a sheer drop into a lake. She also believes there was no help or assistance for any of the revellers, many of whom were 'popping pills'.

Now, she's calling on councils and emergency services to work together and put on safe and legal raves: "Councils need to get their heads together and think a little bit more about facilitating events such as this for young people in areas where they don't cause damage or nuisance to local people and young lives aren't put at risk."

"There needs to be a balance."

"If raves are going to be part of young people's culture and festivals, as they are during the summer, then we have to accept that and make provision for it. I wouldn't like to see that many young people in a building that dangerous, in that position, again.

"I don't want to see local residents having to put up with that level of disruption again but I do want to see young people having fun.

"So, I think the councils and other politicians have to get their heads together and find a way to facilitate this."

As a mother of 'rave goers' I am all for organised raves. I like the idea of young people coming together to enjoy music and unity, however I worry constantly about the dangers ie of unsafe buildings etc.
